Digital Transformation in Asset-Intensive Industries

The energy transition is accelerating, and power generation, transmission, and distribution are evolving at an unprecedented pace. Asset management plays a central role in enabling this transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy system.

At OHROS Consulting Group, we partner with boards and executive teams of Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and other asset-intensive organizations to solve their most pressing strategic and digital challenges. From optimizing asset management and benchmarking performance to supporting long-term investment planning, we help organizations build the capabilities needed for the future.

Digital Transformation

New technologies are fundamentally changing how critical assets are managed, inspected, maintained, and renewed. Innovations such as the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and Generative Artificial Intelligence are creating new opportunities to improve resilience, safety, efficiency, and affordability across entire infrastructure networks.

The benefits of digitalization are already becoming clear. Better asset condition insights enable more targeted maintenance and optimized renewal strategies, while digital technologies improve inspection safety, streamline processes, and strengthen resilience against increasingly frequent extreme weather events.

Our role extends beyond identifying technological opportunities. We help organizations understand the strategic impact of emerging technologies and support them in prioritizing investments, developing implementation roadmaps, and successfully delivering digital transformation programs.

However, digital transformation is rarely straightforward. In our experience, it always begins with people. Digital transformation is first and foremost a human transformation. It affects employees, customers, organizational culture, required competencies, and the broader supply chain ecosystem.

From an investment perspective, digitalization is also changing traditional asset lifecycles. Renewal cycles that historically spanned 30 to 40 years are, for certain asset classes, reducing to 10 to 15 years. At the same time, assets are becoming increasingly complex, with hardware and software requiring different upgrade and replacement cycles throughout their operational life.

Operationally, organizations must develop advanced analytical capabilities and integrated digital systems that enable better, data-driven decision-making throughout the asset lifecycle. Achieving this requires seamless integration of data across multiple asset management platforms.

The reality, however, is often one of fragmentation. Many organizations operate legacy systems that have evolved organically over decades, making integration difficult and modernization both technically challenging and capital intensive. Digital investments must also compete with ongoing maintenance, renewal, and network expansion programs, requiring careful prioritization within constrained investment portfolios.

Adding to this complexity is the limited availability of specialized contractors across Europe. As demand continues to grow, resource constraints increasingly influence the timing and sequencing of digital initiatives alongside traditional infrastructure projects.

Regulatory developments present another challenge. Asset-intensive organizations are expected to increase transparency and data sharing while simultaneously strengthening cybersecurity and protecting critical infrastructure. Balancing these competing requirements requires a thoughtful and well-governed digital strategy.

For Transmission System Operators in particular, regulators increasingly expect the adoption of digital technologies. Yet the financial responsibility for these investments largely remains with the operators themselves, while dedicated incentives for digitalization are often limited. As a result, organizations must carefully prioritize investments based on the measurable value they deliver.
